loading into the simulation isn't always entirely pleasant, but this time the ear-splitting screech nearly sends her to her knees. she claps her hands to her ears and looks wild-eyed at the person accompanying her on this journey.

"go," she spits to the pixelated roaring moon at her side.

"have you explored the scarlet book before?" she asks when the moon barrels into the creature's side.

The roaring screech was the first thing to greet them, and like freya morningstar, PENELOPE LIVY held no resistance to its innate sound. She fell to one knee, eyes open just enough to see the roaring moon make little of the screamtail's sound.

fire wants to burn. it is an ever-starving thing. she does not envy the councilwoman's necessary exercises in control - not then and certainly not now. the noise is silenced and freya drops her hands, offering one only as an afterthought.

circumstance brought them together in the penitentiary, but the ruinous beast that lives under her skin gives freya pause with more trust than she can spare.

the forest tumbles in on itself and she raises a hand despite herself, flinching as the world comes down around them.

"yeah, i don't like them either."

if she could forget about the ward in its entirety, she would. only you can, you can, so why don't you, freya? why don't you ask ana to take it all away?

fissures hold fast; memories are shunted away and her vision stays clear, no longer slip-sliding through other realms and other times. she looks sideways at penny and frowns, wincing at how bright the landscape becomes.

"i try not to think about it. why?"

a mythical horse crashes towards them. two options float at either side of it and freya opts for the least complicated of the two. her dragons make quick of this one too.

It wasn't the daylight that caused her to flinch, but the scenery that erupted from it. Remnants of a forbidden time, strung up together like a backdrop to a live production. Penelope could feel herself drawn to it, as though memories vibrated at the chance of release.
